Chester Step Test (CST) – Cardiovascular Fitness for High-Risk Jobs

The Chester Step Test (CST) is a widely recognized submaximal cardiovascular assessment used to evaluate aerobic fitness levels in individuals performing physically demanding roles. Developed over 20 years ago, CST is now a global standard in pre-employment, fitness-for-duty, and periodic assessments across high-risk industries.

This test provides a safe, progressive, and reliable way to estimate VO₂ max and overall cardiovascular performance without requiring maximal effort. It is especially valuable in occupational settings where cardiovascular fitness is a critical safety and performance factor.

Used extensively in fire and rescue services, law enforcement, military, oil and gas, and offshore wind industries, the CST ensures that workers can meet the physical demands of their job while minimizing health risks.

Key Features of the CST

  1. Conducted using a step platform and metronome-paced increments
  2. Measures heart rate response at five ascending intensity levels
  3. Provides an estimated VO₂ max to evaluate cardiovascular fitness
  4. Non-invasive and ideal for mass screening and routine monitoring
  5. Recognized by occupational health professionals and safety bodies worldwide

  1. Firefighters and first responders
  2. Police officers and security personnel
  3. Military service candidates
